Minneapolis Police officers arrested George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, after a convenience store employee called 911 suspecting that he had given them a counterfeit $20 bill.
During his arrest, a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on Floyd's neck with his knee for over 8 minutes— ultimately killing Floyd.
The incident sparked both national and international outrage and Americans took to the streets in the thousands. Houston, Floyd's native city, spent 2 weeks in mourning and protest before his funeral and memorial.
